The Process: Oil & Cold Wax
Working with oil and cold wax is an immersive and dynamic process that combines the rich qualities of oil paint with the textural possibilities of wax.
From the Artist
My journey with oil and cold wax began serendipitously at a mixed media workshop many years ago. I was unaware that the focus was exclusively on a medium I knew nothing about but was instantly captivated with the tactile nature of cold wax.
Through this technique I explored the contrasts between smooth and rough surfaces bringing a sculptural dimension to each painting. I discovered that cold wax medium is made from bees wax, solvent and resin that forms a paste-like consistency when mixed with oil paint. It also became apparent that the cold wax was ideal for intuitive painting due to the flexibility, rich textural possibilities, and ability to build complex surfaces. The unpredictable nature of the medium can lead to unexpected results adding to the organic quality found in my abstract work. I start by preparing a rigid surface, typically birch wood panels, to handle the weight and textures of the materials. There are a variety of tools such as squeegees, trowels, palette knifes, brayers, rollers and often my hands to manipulate the paint. I’ll usually work on a dozen paintings at a time to allow the medium to “set" which can take hours or days. This is an integral part of the process as I selectively scrape and dissolve areas to reveal underlying layers. By carefully applying solvents I can create intricate patterns and effects. You are invited to visit my studio at SRQ East Art Studios You will often find me at one of our Second Saturday of the Month Open Studios. In addition to my cold wax and oil works, I have original small works and more available. In September of 2024, my cold wax and oil work will be on view at the Define Art Gallery at 68 South Palm Avenue in downtown Sarasota. I hope to see you soon! Pearl |
